March Art Hour : Self Care art

Making art is one of many ways I enjoy taking care of myself. Getting lost in a coloring book or painting project leaves me feeling light and at ease.

While self-care has become a captivating concept in recent years it is a term that was first used by medical professionals in the 1950s and later became popularized by the Black Panther Party during the height of the civil rights movement. Black communities and activists relied on mindfulness and movement practices to care for themselves as necessary.

“Holistic needs of Black communities and Black activists have always been a part of community organizer’ tactics. Black women often queer pushed other activists toward caring for themselves as a necessary everyday revolutionary practice” says Maryam K. Aziz Ph.D postdoctoral research fellow at Penn State University. *

We continue to witness and experience challenging times. From racial inequality to the situation in Ukraine to the rulings in Texas our mental health is fragile at this moment in time making it understandable why self-care has become more of the conversation.

Taking time to take care of ourselves and lean into practices that feel good allows us to manage stress improve wellbeing show up for others and enjoy life overall.

At this month’s Art Hour event we will honor ourselves by acknowledging the various ways we enjoy caring for ourselves. This will be something you can come back to to remind yourself of what brings you joy and makes you feel good.

Materials needed:

Making art is a form of self-care. Art Hour allows you to make something of your own while sharing virtual space with others. Art Hour is designed for those who say “I’m not creative”. This is a safe space to explore your creativity free from judgment and negative self-talk.

How it works: We’ll begin with a short meditation to get grounded and centered. I’ll then lead a creative project using materials you have around the house or are easy to find. Finally we’ll conclude with an opportunity to share and reflect on the experience.
