5 things to do when you’re creatively stuck:

Creativity doesn’t always come with ease. Our brains handle a lot of information, and it can be challenging to always be calling in creative ideas. Over the years, I have found some helpful ways to get myself back on track when I feel stuck. I hope you find comfort in one or more of the items on this list.

1. Go for a walk

As creatives, our mind is our greatest tool. When we are stopped from getting into our imagination and daydreaming, we are stopped from making our best work. A change of scenery can be our greatest blessing.

There are many great benefits of getting outside. It changes up thought patterns, and allows you to take a break, and step back from what you’re working on, making room for new ideas.

2. Dance and move your body

Getting up from your chair and moving your body awakens different parts of your mind. Sometimes what stops us from being in creative flow is self-judgment. Allowing yourself to be at ease in your body and move in ways that feel good; free from negative self-talk, can carry over into your creative headspace.

3. Do something totally different

Sometimes our imagination and creativity aren’t alive in the present moment. Allow yourself to go do something else. Empty the dishwasher, call a friend, make a delicious meal. Change up what you’re doing and come back to your creative work when you feel inspired.

If you’re really in need of a break, book a weekend away somewhere you’ve never been. The newness will offer great inspiration!

4. Handle the bigger problem

Time and time again, I have found it hard to get into a creative flow when other things are on my mind. Is there a conversation you need to have or a problem you’re carrying around?

Taking care of these bigger issues will allow you to free up your headspace.

5. STOP

When you’re feeling stuck, you might just need to give your brain a minute to breathe. Set a timer for 10 minutes and step away from your workspace. You just might find new inspiration when your alarm goes off.
